Made to be read aloud
A story that balances silliness with subtle facts — written to make little listeners giggle, hoot and join in.
A picture book for ages 3–9
Gilly has lost his family somewhere in the rainforest canopy. To find them, he’ll need to learn the one thing every gibbon knows by heart — how to sing.
The story
High in the rainforests of Borneo, a young gibbon called Gilly finds himself alone. His parents are gone, and the forest is very big for someone so small.
But Gilly isn’t alone for long. One by one, the apes and monkeys of the canopy step in to help — teaching him to swing from branch to branch, and to find the voice that every gibbon family uses to call to one another across the treetops.
Playful, warm and gently funny, How to Sing Like a Gibbon weaves real primate facts into a story about courage, friendship and belonging — and the wild places that make it all possible.
Why families love it
A story that balances silliness with subtle facts — written to make little listeners giggle, hoot and join in.
Written by a former primate rehabilitation worker, so every swing, song and snack is grounded in how gibbons really live.
Delicate ink and watercolour illustrations by Napas Somsawad bring the Bornean canopy to life on every spread.

Hear the song
Gibbons greet the morning with loud, looping calls that ring out across the forest — and mated pairs often sing together in duets. Inside the book, a QR code lets young readers hear the real thing. Have a listen here.

Meet the creators
April’s love of gibbons began in the rainforest itself. Years of primate rehabilitation work in Thailand — caring for apes and monkeys on their way back to the wild — inspired a story to help young readers fall in love with gibbons, too, and to spark a lifelong curiosity in the next generation of conservationists.
Napas paints the natural world in fine ink line and soft watercolour. The illustrations for How to Sing Like a Gibbon capture the texture of every leaf and the gentle expressions of Gilly and his forest friends — art to linger over long after bedtime.
Every copy helps
A portion of the profits from every book goes to the Borneo Nature Foundation, which protects the peat-swamp and lowland rainforests of Borneo — home to wild gibbons like Gilly — through research, community partnerships and conservation education.
